SOFTBOX

Although the soft box is not as popular a “location light” as the umbrella, there are some photographers that think a softbox is the best type of portrait light.  The unwieldy set-up and take down routine has discouraged many devoted fans from using the softbox on location.  Having to remove or install the head from the softbox is rather hectic project.  Usually the photographer “dedicates” a head to the softbox to avoid the hassle. This aggravates the goal of traveling “light”.

The LightLite soft box adapter is meant to work with soft boxes 24” x 30” or less.  These are the most popular sizes used on location. With the use of the LiteLight  softbox accessory, the softbox stays on the stand with or without the LiteLight head.  It takes five seconds to put the head in place and five seconds to take it out of the softbox.  The mirrored finish on the softbox reflector means that the pattern of light is 180 degrees, which contributes to a more even distribution of light from the softbox.  Using the deflector on the flash tube insures the most even light coming from a soft box (figures 1 - 6).  LiteLight softbox adapters are available for both Chimera and Photoflex speedrings and adapts to the 5" and the 5 5/8" diameter speedrings.

The LiteLight mounting also allows the studio user to leave their softboxes assembled, dismounting the LiteLight head for other purposes. Larger soft boxes would require a custom adapter to accept the LiteLight head.

For those wishing to make a custom soft box, the LiteLight head, with ¼” x  20 tripod socket in the base, offers limitless opportunities for making special purpose softboxes. (See figures 9.)
